It’s no secret that our volunteers are amazing! Time after time, they make incredible efforts to get informed and take action to advocate for a world without extreme poverty. Our Results Canada 2020 Volunteer Awards puts the spotlight on a few of our volunteers, but we have so much appreciation for the contributions of every single one.
This month, we’re featuring the winner of our Social Media Butterfly Award: Norm Filiol.
This volunteer is constantly active on social media and works hard using his platform to make a difference.
Norm believes passionately in the power of individuals to make a difference, which he demonstrates by continuously using social media to build the political will to end extreme poverty.
“The problems we are tackling are some of the most important ones facing our world. These problems can be solved and building the political will to do so is possible. I believe that each of us has the power to make a difference.”
Norm started volunteering with Results three years ago and never looked back. Being new to advocacy, he learned the power of his voice and realized how big of an impact he can have by taking action to help make the world a better place for everyone.
“Last year, Canada announced it was increasing our contribution to the Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB and Malaria by 15.7%, to $930.4 million. A few weeks before, it looked unlikely to happen, so we started an intense campaign on social media and wrote many letters to decision makers, letters to the editor, and op-eds. When I heard the announcement, I truly understood that we can make a difference. Our actions had turned things around.” Norm says, recalling a particular moment he was proud of.
To Norm, advocacy is all about being active rather than passive, and knowing how to work productively at solving some of the world’s greatest injustices. He describes it as one of the most powerful tools we have to make a difference:
“We can each help in different ways. Advocacy helps amplifies those efforts. Advocacy is used to build awareness, educate and ultimately influence decision makers. It can move the world.”
Congratulations Norm on winning the Social Media Butterfly Award and thank you for continuously raising your voice for a better world!
