we have hope because we know it’s possible
Over the last few decades, the world has experienced incredible wins in the journey to ending poverty, showing us that progress is possible.
- Since 2000, the global child mortality rate has dropped by more than half.
- More children are surviving and thriving thanks to initiatives like Gavi, which has helped vaccinate over a billion children, saving more than 17 million lives.
- We’ve seen a 61% reduction in deaths from AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria since the Global Fund was established in 2002.
- The global prevalence of stunting among children under 5 has dropped from 33% in 2000 to 22.3% in 2022.
- Maternal mortality rates are down to two-thirds of what they used to be.
- In countries where Gavi has supported immunization efforts, a child born today is 70% less likely to die from a vaccine-preventable disease before their fifth birthday than they were in 2000.
These victories give us every reason to believe that we can—and will—end extreme poverty. Canada has been at the forefront of these efforts, championing policies that protect the most vulnerable. This didn’t happen by chance—it's the result of tireless advocacy by passionate people like you.
imagine a world…
where every child:
- is vaccinated against preventable diseases
- has access to nutritious food
- has the chance to learn, grow, and succeed no matter where they live, even in conflict zones
We know this future is possible.
We asked our volunteers about their hopes and dreams for a #FutureWithoutPoverty. They said:
- My vision for Canada is to prioritize health through prevention and vaccination in such a way that it becomes standard in care, around the world. (Tiffany)
- My hope is that Canada will continue to prioritize education and economic opportunities for women and girls, especially in conflict-affected regions, by increasing financial support and partnerships with global organizations. (Helen)
- Canada ought to lead the way in promoting climate-resilient economies that give priority to the most vulnerable at the next G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis. Canada should pave the way for a global economy that benefits all. (Adil)
- To make gender equality a reality, all women and girls around the world must have equal access to quality education and learning opportunities. (Adeola)
- Building economies that benefit everyone also include building societies that empower and benefit everyone regardless of what their diversity is. (Andrea)
