It is no secret that Canadians are feeling this looming dread right now because of the unfortunate politics to the south of our border. This is a time when we are reflecting hard on who to vote for, with our focus largely being on who can handle what President Trump will bring the best, which potentially could have Canadians voting differently across party lines than how they usually vote. There is no doubt that this is an important question to ask ourselves, but we must be cognisant of the fact that one of the best ways for Canada to face these looming threats, is not just in our actions against or in response to the US, but also in strengthening our relationships with the rest of the world. One of the best ways to do this is by contributing to international development. Contribution to international development leads to stronger economies across the globe and therefore more trading partners and ally ships for Canada to expand its highly reliant market beyond its current heavy reliance on the US. The more a country is open to the world, the more successful its economy is and therefore its ability to increase living standards for all. Looking out for candidates who have this vision for the upcoming election is a solid plan for looking out for Canada’s future in these uncertain times.
