Can you imagine living on less than $2.15 a day and not being able to access necessities such as healthcare, education, and stable employment? For the 700 million people living in poverty, that is a reality they face every day. People living in poverty experience various issues from increased risk of infectious diseases, precarious and unsafe work, to higher gender inequality rates.
However, we as Canadians can do something about this. We can call on the Canadian government to increase the International Assistance Envelope by an additional $650 million per year in budget 2025. The International Assistance Envelope funds important initiatives from the treatment against infectious diseases, such as tuberculous and AIDS, to providing education for children in crisis situations. Canada has made significant progress in reducing global poverty, as an important partner in international development, and must continue their efforts to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive and live healthy lives. where poverty is a thing of the past, where everyone has the dignity of economic security. Because in the end, isn't that the best gift we could give to future generations?
