The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is sounding the alarm on children’s health: disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have interrupted childhood immunization around the world and set back vaccination rates to levels not seen since 2008.
According to a new UNICEF report—State of the World's Children 2023—nearly 67 million children around the world missed out entirely or partially on the routine vaccines that keep them safe from deadly disease between 2019 and 2021. 48 million of them have not received a single dose of any kind.
As these 67 million children are now moving past the age when they would normally be vaccinated, urgent action is needed to catch up and to support the recovery of immunization services set back during the pandemic.
