PARLIAMENTARIANS LAUNCHING MULTI-PARTISAN GLOBAL COOPERATION CAUCUS TO TACKLE GLOBAL CHALLENGES AND WORK TOWARDS ENDING EXTREME POVERTY
November 7, 2023 – OTTAWA In the face of heightened global tensions, devastating impacts of extreme weather events propelled by climate change, and rising global health concerns, today, Parliamentarians from across Canada are launching the Global Cooperation Caucus. The Global Cooperation Caucus is a multi-party, non-partisan initiative composed of Members of Parliament and Senators working together to learn, take action, and lead Canada’s advancement in ending extreme poverty around the world.
The COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath have significantly worsened global poverty, with the global poverty rate rising from 7.8 to 9.1 percent between 2019 and 2022 according to estimates from the World Bank, and nearly 97 million more people pushed into extreme poverty, living on less than USD $1.90 a day. Combined with this is the collateral damage of rising interest rates in G20 countries who are struggling to respond to an affordability and inflation crisis, risking a global debt crisis, and making investments in climate and economic growth increasingly unaffordable in low- and middle-income countries.
The impacts of health and climate are no longer neatly tucked away by country borders, and Canada must carve out a way to meet the global challenges we are facing. The Caucus will give Parliamentarians the opportunity to meet with key stakeholders in global cooperation including technical experts, those with lived experience, and civil society leaders working in global health, education, development finance, climate resilience, food security, and nutrition. The Caucus will deepen engagement, collaboration, and knowledge exchange between Parliamentarians and Canadian civil society organizations on the front lines of tackling these issues. The Caucus will also provide Parliamentarians with access to a global parliamentary network, enabling Canadian Parliamentarians an opportunity to learn and share with their political counterparts from around the world.
The fight to end extreme poverty globally requires a holistic approach. This Caucus will seek to provide effective, efficient, and impactful solutions to global issues.
The Caucus is co-chaired by five Members of Parliament (MPs): Arielle Kayabaga (MP, London West), Stéphane Bergeron (MP, Montarville), David Epp (MP, Chatham-Kent, Leamington), Heather McPherson (MP, Edmonton Strathcona), and Mike Morrice (MP, Kitchener Centre).
The Caucus is being supported by a Secretariat comprised of Results Canada and ONE Canada.
Results Canada is a non-profit, non-partisan, grassroots advocacy organization that believes in the power of everyday people to generate the political will necessary to end extreme poverty.
ONE Campaign is a global movement campaigning to end extreme poverty and preventable disease by 2030, so that everyone, everywhere can lead a life of dignity and opportunity.
