The United States is responsible for most of these cuts, but it\u2019s a concerning trend among the world\u2019s wealthiest countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These aid cuts are coming at the same time as we\u2019re seeing more complex crises around the world that need our attention, including about<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.worldbank.org\/en\/opendata\/september-2025-global-poverty-update-from-the-world-bank--new-da#:~:text=As%20of%202024%2C%20839%20million,defined%20in%20the%20What's%20New).\">800 million people<\/a> living in extreme poverty<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Instead of stepping up when needed most, the Canadian government announced its own reductions in 2025<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/resultscanada.ca\/press-release-carney-breaks-promise-and-cuts-aid-in-budget-2025\/\">cutting $2.7 billion in international aid<\/a> over four years. This represents a historic and drastic decline in Canadian funding and goes against Prime Minister Mark Carney\u2019s campaign pledge that his government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZOdPoZxWUkI\">\u201cwill not cut foreign aid.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-white-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-d6ce2b333270b2e33bb27c14a0260fcb\" id=\"cents\" style=\"background-color:#29b5cf\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffb81c\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><em>DID YOU KNOW?<\/em> <\/mark><\/strong><br>Aid spending is only a tiny fraction of Canada\u2019s overall wealth \u2013 <strong>just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/en\/publications\/2025\/06\/development-co-operation-profiles_02ffa45c\/canada_6bb3f409.html\">32 cents<\/a> of every $100 dollars<\/strong> \u2013 but its impact is immense.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>While the budget does and must provide support for Canadians in need, especially in tough economic times, a small fraction of our spending must also continue to go to international aid to safeguard our future and save millions of lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reducing international aid is not only harmful to people around the world living in extreme poverty, it also weakens Canada\u2019s security and prosperity. Investing in international aid keeps everyone safer by stopping conflicts, preventing the next pandemic, and building stronger economies at home and abroad. Since 2000, international aid has helped <a href=\"https:\/\/data.unicef.org\/resources\/levels-and-trends-in-child-mortality-2024\/\">reduce child mortality<\/a> by half and lift over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/global-issues\/ending-poverty\">one billion people<\/a> out of extreme poverty. Higher levels of aid spending have also been associated with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/langlo\/article\/PIIS2214-109X(26)00008-2\/fulltext\">decline in mortality<\/a> for communicable diseases, including 70% for HIV\/AIDS and 56% for both malaria and nutritional diseases. Simply put, <strong>international aid saves lives.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"engage\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#d50032\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Canada has played an important role in these global efforts<\/mark><\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2010, Canada spearheaded the Muskoka Initiative on Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, crowding in funding from other donors to leverage <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/partnerships\/muskoka-initiative\">US$7.3 billion<\/a> globally towards high impact interventions to <strong>reduce child and maternal mortality<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Canada used its G7 presidency in 2018 to champion the historic Charlevoix Declaration, and with a $400 million commitment, successfully reached <a href=\"https:\/\/international.canada.ca\/en\/global-affairs\/corporate\/reports\/international-assistance-report\/report-2023\"><strong>4 million girls<\/strong><\/a> in fragile and conflict-affected contexts with quality education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Through its Feminist International Assistance Policy (FIAP), Canada has demonstrated leadership for advancing gender equality globally. In 2023\u20132024 alone, Canada's <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2026\/01\/just-numbers-impact-canadas-international-assistance-family-planning-2023-2024\">$76.2 million investment<\/a> in family planning reached 4.7 million women and couples, preventing an estimated <strong>1.6 million unintended pregnancies and more than 2,100 maternal deaths<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f366734cefc405b8d9c59cd76736923b\" style=\"color:#d50032\">this is the strong role we want Canada to continue to have<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But recent aid cuts have threatened global progress. Reducing international aid has far-reaching impacts, costing people their lives, deepening cycles of poverty, and causing long-term instability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re already seeing the <strong>life-threatening impacts of international aid cuts<\/strong> from the United States and other countries, which could lead to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devex.com\/news\/aid-cuts-could-lead-to-millions-of-deaths-by-decade-s-end-new-study-finds-111801\">9.4 million and 22.6 million<\/a> preventable deaths by 2030<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfamamerica.org\/explore\/issues\/making-foreign-aid-work\/what-do-trumps-proposed-foreign-aid-cuts-mean\/\">23 million<\/a> children losing access to education<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/focus2030.org\/en\/the-impact-of-donald-trumps-presidency-on-international-development-an-analysis\/\">200,000 more<\/a> paralytic polio cases every year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/global-health-policy\/the-trump-administrations-foreign-aid-review-status-of-u-s-global-tuberculosis-efforts\/\">10.7 million<\/a> more tuberculosis cases by 2030<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2af4821f1d770ebc1d885a3e5f78ca1c\" style=\"color:#d50032\">right now, Canada\u2019s aid is not meeting our global moment of need<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that can change. As other countries make the dangerous decision to reduce their international aid, Canada can choose to stand up in this difficult time and lead with our strong values. Aid helps stop conflicts before they begin, and conflict prevention is around <a href=\"https:\/\/studylib.net\/doc\/18162619\/preventing-war-is-60-times-cheaper-than-fighting-it\">60 times<\/a> cheaper than war.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aid keeps us safe from global pandemics. Every dollar invested in pandemic preparedness, prevention, and response yields roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepandemicfund.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-07\/Investment%20Case.pdf#:~:text=Every%20dollar%20invested%20in%20pandemic%20PPR%20is,with%20twice%20as%20much%20in%20domestic%20financing.\">$14 in economic and health benefits<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Canadian researchers and manufacturers are studying infectious diseases (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/ScienceFairMap\">see our map<\/a>), developing innovative health tools, producing emergency food, and so much more.
