Extreme poverty is one of the main factors of this unfortunate outcome.

The Group of Seven (G7) countries are anticipated to decrease the aid towards these initiatives by 28% in 2026. This disruption of aid could cause mass mortality rates in children, as an estimated 12 million could die by 2045 from preventable causes, and so on if these cuts increase. Global education cuts itself are already expected to fall by 24 meaning that around 6 million more children may fall victim to not being able to receive a proper education, most of whom live in crisis-affected countries, by 2026. Defending current progress against poverty means strengthening international assistance amongst current gaps in healthcare and education affecting women and young children, continuing to tackle issues related to malnutrition, and further sustaining the research funding towards healthcare treatments to help keep people healthy.

Preserving the integrity of humanitarian capabilities doesn't necessarily start with developing new solutions that could potentially help, but first, changing the system itself to be more effective and resourceful in itself. Our generation currently lives in its most scientifically advanced eras, also accompanied by state-of-the-art technology. Although, these great tools are not reaching where needed the most. Around 272 million children are not in school receiving an education despite learning being needed for well-being, social and emotional skills, and further economic opportunities that they and the community can benefit from.

The Canadian government should be reminded of the necessity to take action in order to decrease this toll, along with the citizens within the nation in order for progress to be maintained. Results Canada is pushing to defend past gains by reinforcing the strength in investing in Canada's future international assistance. This is preceded by strengthening health and education systems such as Global Financing Facility for Women, Children and Adolescents, the Child Nutrition Fund, Global Partnership for Education, and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Furthermore, Results Canada is aiming to make investments towards increasing the advancement in science, research and innovation that will help protect everyone in relation to health outcomes and the development of live-saving medicines, diagnostics, and treatments.

Volunteer Voices articles are penned by Results Canada volunteers, fellows, and staff.
