To cut AIDS funding now is to choose profit over people again.\u201d&nbsp;<br><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">-&nbsp;<\/span>Vuyiseka Dubula, AIDS activist<span style=\"font-size: revert;\"><br><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><img decoding=\"async\"  id=\"image-79-259\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.resultscanada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/quote-icon-mirror.svg\" class=\"ct-image\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Sibulele Sibaca Nomnganga (Sibu) was just a young child at the height of South Africa\u2019s AIDS epidemic. Too young to understand that the disease was claiming the lives of her mother, father, aunt, and uncle. She did know one thing with certainty: their medicine mattered. Each day, she carefully laid out her father\u2019s pills, making sure he took every dose \u2013 a quiet act of love and responsibility far beyond her years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When her parents eventually died from AIDS, Sibu\u2019s role as a caregiver continued. She turned her attention to raising her younger brother. In the face of loss, something powerful ignited within her \u2013 a fierce determination to protect others from experiencing the same pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#d50032\"><strong>The ask:<\/strong> With rising global health threats and widening inequalities, we urge Canada to continue to champion the Global Fund and build on our current level of strong support ($1.21 billion over 3 years) to help #WinTheFight against AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sibu\u2019s story is one of millions. As of 2023, an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/data.unicef.org\/topic\/hivaids\/orphanhood\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/data.unicef.org\/topic\/hivaids\/orphanhood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">14.1 million<\/a> children around the world have lost one or both parents to AIDS-related causes. Today, Sibu is using her voice to make sure their stories are heard and to call for renewed global leadership to finally defeat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) \u2013 the virus that causes AIDS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sibu credits her survival to the global scale-up of HIV prevention and treatment, made possible in large part by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobalfund.org\/en\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.theglobalfund.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria<\/a>. Knowing that she is one of the more than 65 million lives saved since the Global Fund\u2019s inception in 2002 fuels her hope and purpose. In countries where the Global Fund invests, AIDS-related deaths have dropped by 73%, and new infections by 61% since 2002.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>That is tremendous progress.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"div_block-96-321\" class=\"ct-div-block\" ><div id=\"_toggle-97-321\" class=\"oxy-toggle toggle-4095 toggle-4095-expanded\"  data-oxy-toggle-initial-state=\"closed\" data-oxy-toggle-active-class=\"toggle-4095-expanded\" >\n\t\t\t<div class='oxy-expand-collapse-icon' href='#'><\/div>\n\t\t\t<div class='oxy-toggle-content'>\n                <h4 id=\"headline-98-321\" class=\"ct-headline\">the Global Fund\u2019s impact on HIV\/AIDS in numbers<\/h4>\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><div id=\"_rich_text-99-321\" class=\"oxy-rich-text\" ><ul>\n<li>The Global Fund provides 28% of all international financing for HIV programs&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>In 2023, 25 million people were on antiretroviral therapy for HIV in countries where the Global Fund invests.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>695,000 mothers living with HIV received medicine to keep them alive and prevent transmitting HIV to their babies in 2023&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>17.9 million people were reached with HIV prevention services in 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>We must keep going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, HIV is preventable and treatable. But ensuring that the millions of people affected by HIV receive the care they need demands sustained investment. And yet, governments around the world are pulling back, most notably the US \u2013 once a leader in the fight to end HIV\/AIDS. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unaids.org\/en\/impact-US-funding-cuts\/About\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.unaids.org\/en\/impact-US-funding-cuts\/About\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNAIDS<\/a>, the permanent discontinuation of the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) would have a catastrophic impact over the next four years, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>an additional 6.6 million new HIV Infections,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an additional 4.2 million AIDS-related deaths, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 million\u202fadditional children orphaned by AIDS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The world has come too far to let progress slip away.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Global Fund holds its Eighth Replenishment this year, the choice before us is clear: retreat in the face of rising challenges, or double down on a proven solution that saves lives, strengthens health systems, and revitalizes communities.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"div_block-96-321\" class=\"ct-div-block\" ><div id=\"_toggle-97-321\" class=\"oxy-toggle toggle-4095 toggle-4095-expanded\"  data-oxy-toggle-initial-state=\"closed\" data-oxy-toggle-active-class=\"toggle-4095-expanded\" >\n\t\t\t<div class='oxy-expand-collapse-icon' href='#'><\/div>\n\t\t\t<div class='oxy-toggle-content'>\n                <h4 id=\"headline-98-321\" class=\"ct-headline\">the Global Fund\u2019s Eighth Replenishment<\/h4>\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><div id=\"_rich_text-99-321\" class=\"oxy-rich-text\" ><ul>\n<li>The Global Fund raises funds in three-year cycles known as &ldquo;Replenishments&rdquo;.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>This year marks the Eighth Replenishment, which is being co-hosted by the United Kingdom and South Africa.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>The Eighth Replenishment Investment Case outlines the total target of USD$ 18 billion, which the Global Fund hopes to raise to support its lifesaving work.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>The Global Fund estimates that a fully funded Eighth Replenishment would:&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<ul>\n<li>save 23 million lives;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>deliver a return on investment of 1:19; and&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>avert 400 million infections or cases.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Canada has a proud legacy of global leadership (see the drop-down below). With a new government in place, this is a pivotal moment to reaffirm our commitment to building a better world through bold investments in global health. A strong Canadian pledge to the Global Fund\u2019s Eighth Replenishment will not only help #WinTheFight against AIDS, TB, and malaria, but it will demonstrate that Canada stands firmly for equity, solidarity, and a healthier, more just future for all.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"div_block-96-321\" class=\"ct-div-block\" ><div id=\"_toggle-97-321\" class=\"oxy-toggle toggle-4095 toggle-4095-expanded\"  data-oxy-toggle-initial-state=\"closed\" data-oxy-toggle-active-class=\"toggle-4095-expanded\" >\n\t\t\t<div class='oxy-expand-collapse-icon' href='#'><\/div>\n\t\t\t<div class='oxy-toggle-content'>\n                <h4 id=\"headline-98-321\" class=\"ct-headline\">Canada\u2019s support for the Global Fund&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h4>\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><div id=\"_rich_text-99-321\" class=\"oxy-rich-text\" ><ul>\n<li>Canada has supported the Global Fund since the partnership was established in 2002 and is the seventh largest public donor.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>At the last Replenishment in 2022, Canada made a historic investment of CAD$ 1.21 billion towards the Global Fund, representing the largest contribution it had ever made towards a global health initiative.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Canada&rsquo;s investment in the Seventh Replenishment contributed to a record-breaking total of US$ 15.7 billion to support programming in over 120 countries. This funding supported getting 25 million people on antiretroviral therapy for HIV, treating 7.1 million people for TB, and distributing 227 million mosquito nets to prevent malaria in 2023 alone!&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Canada has a seat on the Global Fund board, representing Australia and Switzerland as well.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#d50032\"><strong>The ask:<\/strong> With rising global health threats and widening inequalities, we urge Canada to continue to champion the Global Fund and build on our current level of strong support ($1.21 billion over 3 years) to help #WinTheFight against AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-toolset-blocks-container tb-container\" data-toolset-blocks-container=\"33d3f2180c777382e4cc0e72ec3639ae\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#d50032;font-size:30px\"><strong>latest campaign news<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#<strong>G7Kananaskis2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At last week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/g7.canada.ca\/en\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/g7.canada.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">G7 Leaders\u2019 Summit<\/a> in Kananaskis, Alberta, Heads of State focused on trade, conflict, and climate\u2014but overlooked two of the most powerful tools for global stability: <strong>health and education<\/strong>. Despite clear evidence that investing in people strengthens economies and builds peace, leaders made no new commitments to support health systems, nutrition, or education in crisis settings. Results Canada volunteers have been calling for Canada to lead as G7 host \u2013 and our fight isn\u2019t over. We\u2019ll continue to track upcoming G7 engagements and push for bold investments in health, education, and development because education means peace, and health means security. This event, which brought together representatives from governments, partner organizations, civil society and the private sector raised more than US$ 9 billion, which will help vaccinate 500 million children by 2030, and prevent up to 9 million deaths by scaling up access to vaccines against malaria, dengue, HPV, and tuberculosis. In March, Canada announced a pledge of $675\u202fmillion over the next five years to Gavi and Secretary of State (International Development) Randeep Sarai reannounced this commitment at the pledging conference. But that\u2019s starting to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With support from the Global Fund, local organizations are reshaping how HIV services are delivered by putting young people at the center. At youth clinics and community hubs, trained peer educators offer judgment-free support, combining HIV care with sexual and reproductive health services. With Budget 2025 coming this fall, it\u2019s critically important that we let the Minister of Finance know that we care about building a better, healthier, and more prosperous world. Back in February, we called for Canada to #BudgetForLeadership. Now, months later, we need Canadian leadership, grounded in growing investments for a better world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Write an email to Minister of Finance Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne (<a href=\"mailto:francois-philippe.champagne@parl.gc.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">francois-philippe.champagne@parl.gc.ca<\/a>) and cc your Member of Parliament (find out who your MP is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourcommons.ca\/Members\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>) to let them know that you want to see a #BudgetForLeadership this fall that includes strong investments for international development assistance. Take advantage of these community events to informally meet with your MP to discuss the issues that matter to you, like ending the epidemics of HIV\/AIDS, TB, and malaria!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many ways to find out if your MP is hosting a public event in your riding (like a BBQ) over the summer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check their website<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check their social media accounts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sign up for their newsletter if you haven\u2019t already to get notified of any opportunities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Email or call their constituency office. Make sure to introduce yourself as a constituent!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At the event, take this opportunity to meet them in person, introduce them to Results Canada, educate them about the incredible impact of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and tell them how Canada can step up to help #WinTheFight against the world\u2019s deadliest epidemics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background:linear-gradient(336deg,rgb(255,245,203) 0%,rgb(182,227,212) 50%,rgb(51,167,181) 100%)\"><strong>Expert tip:<\/strong> If you don\u2019t know who your Member of Parliament (MP) is, type your postal code <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourcommons.ca\/Members\/en\">here<\/a>, find their website by clicking the contact information button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#d50032\" class=\"has-inline-color\">write a Letter to the Editor (LTE)<\/mark><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The Global Fund has had a tremendous impact on global efforts to fight HIV\/AIDS, directly protecting the health of the LGBTQ2+ community, which is disproportionately affected by the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the 1980s\u201390s,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/spotlight\/why-the-hiv-epidemic-is-not-over\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AIDS devastated<\/a>&nbsp;LGBTQ2+ communities while governments and media largely stayed silent. Pride Parades became vital spaces to mourn, demand action, and fight stigma. In cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal, these marches have grown into powerful hubs for AIDS activism. In 2022, during the last Global Fund replenishment, Results Canada, our grassroots advocates and partners joined Pride events across the country to draw attention to communities&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unaids.org\/sites\/default\/files\/media_asset\/01-hiv-human-rights-factsheet-criminalization_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">still criminalized<\/a>&nbsp;for their HIV status \u2013 and to call for urgent funding so everyone can access lifesaving care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These Pride Parades will be an important opportunity again this year to call on global leaders to support the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobalfund.org\/en\/investment-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eighth Replenishment<\/a>. Tie your LTE to upcoming pride parades in your community to call for Canada to invest in the Global Fund to help end AIDS once and for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to send your LTE to your local community papers for the best chance of being published! Refer to past volunteer LTEs\u202fbut don\u2019t fall into the trap of copying other people\u2019s styles. It doesn&rsquo;t have to be perfect, and you don&rsquo;t have to be an expert to have an opinion.\n<ul>\n<li>Create an outline of your letter using the <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.resultscanada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/communicating-a-message-powerfully.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EPIC format<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Keep it short &ndash; 150-200 words. Being clear and concise will increase your chances of getting published.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Focus on your perspective and speak from the heart while supporting your opinion with evidence from our <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/Results-Canada-take-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">call-to-action<\/a> and\/or your research.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Remember to state the problem early on and include a solution to the issue which is usually the &ldquo;ask&rdquo; in the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/Results-Canada-take-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">call-to-action<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Write a catchy title that will draw the reader in.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Review your draft to make sure you are using respectful and inclusive language &ndash; see our anti-oppression best practices.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Decide if you are sending your LTE to one or many newspapers. If you&rsquo;re emailing multiple newspapers, put their addresses in the BCC field.
